Carole Nelson Douglas est une auteure américaine très prolifique, principalement connue pour ses romans policier, thriller, fantasy, et fiction pour femmes. Elle a écrit un total de soixante romans, dont ses deux séries les plus célèbres sont la série de mystères Midnight Louie et les romans de suspense Irene Adler. Douglas est née à Everett, Washington, en 1944 et a étudié à la College of St. Catherine, où elle a obtenu un diplôme en littérature anglaise et théâtre. Après l'obtention de son diplôme, elle a commencé sa carrière en tant que journaliste et éditrice pour une agence de presse locale à Minneapolis.
La carrière d'écrivain de Douglas a vraiment décollé après avoir découvert une petite annonce proposant un chat noir nommé Midnight Louie. Elle a écrit un article à son sujet, le mettant dans la perspective du chat, et a ensuite utilisé le nom pour sa série de romans policiers mettant en scène un détective félin. La série Midnight Louie, qui présente un chat noir détective, est connue pour son esprit et son humour, et a été un succès auprès des lecteurs depuis de nombreuses années. Certains des épisodes de la série comprennent une dédicace au Midnight Louie original, reconnaissant que neuf vies n'ont pas suffi pour l'inspiration de la série.
En plus de la série Midnight Louie, Douglas est également connue pour ses romans de suspense mettant en scène Irene Adler. Elle a été la première femme à créer une série dérivée des histoires de Sherlock Holmes, avec Irene Adler en personnage principal. La série a été saluée par les lecteurs et les critiques, le premier roman, Good Night, Mr. Holmes, ayant été nommé livre de l'année par le New York Times.
