Charles Bukowski

Charles Bukowski, né Heinrich Karl Bukowski, est un auteur américain d'origine allemande, considéré comme l'un des poètes les plus fascinants de sa génération. Né à Andernach, en Allemagne, il déménage avec sa famille aux États-Unis à l'âge de trois ans et grandit à Los Angeles. L'œuvre de Bukowski est fortement marquée par l'ambiance sociale, culturelle et économique de sa ville natale, mettant l'accent sur la vie ordinaire des Américains pauvres, l'acte d'écriture, l'alcool, les relations avec les femmes et la monotonie du travail.

La carrière d'écrivain de Bukowski a été marquée par un parcours tumultueux. Après avoir fréquenté le Los Angeles City College de 1939 à 1941, il déménage à New York City dans l'espoir de devenir écrivain. Cependant, son manque de succès en matière de publication à cette époque l'amène à abandonner l'écriture en 1946, entraînant une décennie de forte consommation d'alcool. Il a occupé une grande variété d'emplois pour subvenir à ses besoins d'écrivain, y compris lavage de vaisselle, conducteur de camion, chargeur, facteur, gardien, préposé à la station-service, magasinier, ouvrier d'entrepôt, commis d'expédition, préposé aux postes, préposé aux stationnements, auxiliaire de la Croix-Rouge, et ascensoriste. Il a également travaillé dans une usine de biscuits pour chiens, un abattoir, une fabrique de gâteaux et de biscuits, et a collé des affiches dans les stations de métro de New York.

Bukowski a repris l'écriture en 1956, après avoir développé un ulcère hémorragique. Il a publié son premier livre de poésie en 1959 et a publié plus de quarante-cinq livres de poésie et de prose. Parmi ses œuvres les plus notables figurent Pulp (1994), Screams from the Balcony (1993), et The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992). L'œuvre de Bukowski a eu un impact significatif sur la littérature contemporaine et il est considéré comme l'un des écrivains américains les plus connus de poésie et de prose contemporaines, ainsi qu'un poète des plus influents et imités. Il est décédé d'une leucémie à San Pedro, en Californie, le 9 mars 1994, à l'âge de soixante-treize ans.
