Joan Aiken était une auteure anglaise très respectée, née le 4 septembre 1924 à Rye, dans le Sussex. Elle provenait d'une famille profondément enracinée dans la littérature, y compris son père, Conrad Aiken, un poète américain lauréat du Pulitzer Prize, et sa sœur, Jane Aiken Hodge, également écrivain. Sa mère, Jessie MacDonald, était diplômée d'un Master de Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Aiken était largement reconnue pour ses contributions aux genres de la littérature pour enfants, de la fantasy et du thriller. Elle a commencé sa carrière professionnelle en travaillant pour le Bureau d'information des Nations Unies pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et ensuite en tant qu'éditrice et écrivain indépendant pour le magazine Argosy. C'est après cela qu'elle a commencé à écrire à temps plein, se concentrant principalement sur les livres pour enfants et les thrillers. Ses distinctions notables comprennent le Guardian Award en 1969 et le Edgar Allan Poe Award en 1972.
