Robert Leckie

Robert Leckie est né à Philadelphie, en Pennsylvanie, le 18 décembre 1920 et a grandi à Rutherford, dans le New Jersey, en tant que membre d'une famille irlandaise catholique de huit enfants. La carrière d'écrivain de Leckie a commencé au lycée lorsqu'il est devenu pigiste sportif pour "The Bergen Evening Record" à Hackensack, dans le New Jersey, à l'âge de seize ans.

En janvier 1942, Leckie s'engage dans le Corps des Marines des États-Unis et a servi au combat dans le théâtre pacifique pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il était éclaireur et mitrailleur dans la compagnie H, 2e bataillon 1er régiment de Marines de la 1ère division de Marines (États-Unis). Leckie a vu l'action dans des batailles importantes telles que Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, et Peleliu, où il a subi un choc concussionnel. Il a été renvoyé honorablement en mars 1945 après son retour aux États-Unis.

Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Leckie est devenu reporter pour l'Associated Press, le "Buffalo Courier-Express", le "New York Journal American", le "New York Daily News" et "The Star-Ledger." Il a épousé Vera Keller, une voisine d'enfance, et ils ont eu trois enfants : David, Geoff et Joan. En 1951, Leckie a décidé d'écrire un mémoire après avoir été inspiré par la comédie musicale Broadway "South Pacific", se sentant obligé de raconter l'histoire vraie de la guerre. Son premier livre, "Helmet for My Pillow", a été publié en 1957 et est devenu un best-seller. Leckie a écrit plus de 40 livres sur l'histoire de la guerre américaine, couvrant les conflits de la guerre française et indienne (1754-1763) à l'Opération Tempête du désert (1991). Robert Leckie est décédé le 24 décembre 2001 après une longue bataille contre la maladie d'Alzheimer.
