Salman Rushdie

Ahmed Salman Rushdie, plus connu sous le nom de Salman Rushdie, est un écrivain britannique d'origine indienne, principalement connu pour la controverse entourant son roman "Les Versets sataniques". Rushdie est né à Bombay, en Inde, en 1947, d'une mère institutrice et d'un père marchand aisé. Il a reçu sa première éducation dans une école privée prestigieuse de Bombay avant d'être envoyé à The Rugby School dans le Warwickshire, en Angleterre. Il a poursuivi des études supérieures au King's College de l'Université de Cambridge, où il a étudié l'histoire.

La carrière d'écrivain de Rushdie a débuté dans les années 1970, lorsqu'il est retourné en Angleterre après un bref séjour au Pakistan. Il a travaillé comme rédacteur publicitaire avant de publier son premier roman "Grimus" en 1975. Au fil des ans, Rushdie a reçu de nombreux prix pour son écriture. Il est Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, fellow de la Royal Society of Literature et a été anobli par la reine Elizabeth en 2007 pour ses services à la littérature. Parmi ses œuvres les plus notables figurent "Les Enfants de minuit", qui a remporté le prix Booker, et "La Fin de la promenade de l'Hindou".

La publication des "Versets sataniques" en 1988 a entraîné des protestations violentes de musulmans dans plusieurs pays, entraînant des menaces de mort et un fatwa émis par l'ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, le guide suprême de l'Iran, appelant à l'exécution de Rushdie. Cela l'a contraint à vivre caché pendant près d'une décennie, ne faisant que de rares apparitions en public. En 2007, Rushdie a été nommé Chevalier Bachelor pour ses contributions à la littérature, et il a été le Writer in Residence distingué à l'Université Emory de 2007 à 2012.

Les œuvres de Rushdie puisent souvent dans ses expériences de croissance en Inde et au Pakistan et sa migration en Angleterre. Son style d'écriture est classé comme réalisme magique, et ses thèmes explorent les connexions, les perturbations et les migrations entre les mondes oriental et occidental. En plus de ses romans et de ses œuvres non fictionnelles, Rushdie a également publié des histoires courtes et a servi de co-éditeur pour "The Vintage Book of Short Stories".
