Shelby Foote

Shelby Foote était un romancier et historien militaire américain très respecté, principalement connu pour sa trilogie histoire de la Guerre de Sécession intitulée "The Civil War: A Narrative". Né en Mississippi en 1916, la vie et l'œuvre de Foote ont suivi les importantes transformations qui ont eu lieu dans le Sud américain, de l'ancien système agraire des planteurs de l'Ancien Sud à l'ère des droits civiques du Nouveau Sud.

La vaste connaissance de Foote et son talent de conteur unique en font un historien excellent, et sa trilogie sur la Guerre de Sécession est considérée comme une remarquable réalisation littéraire et historique. Les trois volumes de "The Civil War: A Narrative" offrent un compte rendu clair et intelligent de la période difficile et tourmentée de quatre ans qui a eu un impact profond sur le mode de vie américain. L'œuvre de Foote est très respectée, et sa trilogie est considérée comme une contribution essentielle aux collections historiques américaines.

Durant la majeure partie de sa carrière, Foote est resté relativement méconnu du grand public jusqu'à son apparition dans le documentaire PBS "The Civil War" de Ken Burns en 1990.
