Stephen Greenblatt

Stephen Greenblatt est un auteur et professeur américain éminent, principalement connu pour ses contributions à la critique et à la théorie littéraires. Il est né à Boston, Massachusetts, le 7 novembre 1943 et a grandi dans la ville voisine de Newton. Greenblatt a obtenu son doctorat à Yale et occupe actuellement le poste de professeur Cogan de littérature anglaise et américaine à l'Université Harvard. En plus de son rôle académique, il est également rédacteur en chef de The Norton Anthology of English Literature.

Greenblatt est largement considéré comme l'un des fondateurs du New Historicism, une approche critique qui met l'accent sur les contextes culturels, politiques et sociaux des œuvres littéraires. Il fait souvent référence à cette méthode sous le nom de «poétique culturelle» et a été une influence majeure dans le domaine depuis l'introduction du terme dans les années 1980. Greenblatt a écrit et édité de nombreux livres, articles et collections de critiques, se concentrant principalement sur le New Historicism, la culture, les études de la Renaissance et les études shakespeariennes. Il est également co-fondateur de la revue littéraire-culturelle Representations.

Au cours de sa carrière, Greenblatt a reçu divers honneurs et récompenses, dont le prix James Russell Lowell de la MLA pour «Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England», le prix Distinguished Humanist de la Fondation Mellon et le prix Distinguished Teaching de l'Université de Californie, Berkeley. Il est membre de l'Académie américaine des arts et des sciences, de l'Académie américaine des arts et des lettres et de l'Académie américaine des sciences philosophiques. En 2016, Greenblatt a été nommé lauréat du prix Holberg en reconnaissance de son travail exceptionnel dans les humanités. Son livre le plus populaire, «Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare», a passé neuf semaines sur la liste des best-sellers du New York Times. Greenblatt réside actuellement à Cambridge, Massachusetts et au Vermont.
