William Wilberforce

William Wilberforce était un homme politique britannique, philanthrope et abolitionniste de premier plan, surtout connu pour sa campagne de toute une vie contre la traite transatlantique des esclaves. En tant que membre du Parlement, il a joué un rôle déterminant dans l'adoption du Slave Trade Act de 1807, qui a aboli la traite des esclaves dans l'Empire britannique. Ses efforts ne se limitaient pas à l'abolitionnisme, car il a également défendu des réformes sociales plus larges et fondé des organisations influentes telles que la Church Mission Society et le précurseur de la RSPCA.

Chrétien fervent, le travail de Wilberforce était profondément ancré dans ses convictions religieuses, qui ont motivé son engagement en faveur des causes humanitaires. Malgré une opposition importante et des problèmes de santé chroniques, il est resté ferme dans son plaidoyer pour la justice morale et sociale.
